Founded in 2007, the 50 Books PoC community on LiveJournal.com was created to encourage people to read books by writers of color/colour. By which is meant, non white.
Since 2008 I've kept track of the books I'm reading by non/other than white authors. One year, when I was really, really focused on reading pretty much only books by non/other than white authors, I *almost* read 50 in a year. (I also felt like I wasn't keeping up with YA books in general). I'm no longer a member of that community, but I still think that their philosophy of being aware of where the authors you're reading are coming from is a good one.
As a result, I've challenged myself to read 50 books by non/other than white authors this year, while also challenging myself to read 50 books by queer authors, and 40 books by Australian women, and at least 80 books overall. I may have set myself up for failure, but we'll see how much I manage to achieve.
As far as the 50books_poc go, here are my 2012 reads:
1. Poppy at Summerhill by Gabrielle Wang (Chinese-Australian)
2. Poppy and the Thief by Gabrielle Wang
3. Poppy Comes Home, by Gabrielle Wang
